Sex and Pornography Addiction

You are not alone.

Many people, both men and women, suffer from sex and pornography addiction. In fact, 6 to 8 percent of all Americans can be classified as addicted to sex, according to the National Council on Sexual Addiction Compulsivity. This could mean as many as 24 million people. In addition, a Stanford study found that 25 million Americans spend between 1 and 10 hours per week looking at pornography.

While having sex or viewing pornography doesn’t make you an addict in and of itself, many people use them to help cope with anxiety, depression and other mental health issues. Due to the oxytocin produced in your brain from the thrill, this could actually be as addicting as a chemical dependence.

This addiction is furthered through a shame cycle mainly due to societal norms. People medicate their shame through the high of sexual addiction, which creates more shame. The further you go down the spiral, the more shame there is. This makes it difficult for many to get help, but assistance to overcome sex and pornography addiction is necessary.

It gets to the point where sex and porn are used as a crutch, something that can be extremely damaging to your personal and professional life. This can mean losing time, money, relationships, your career and even your life via a sexually transmitted disease.
