Hello,

My name is John Nesse. I received my Bachelors and Masters degrees in Social Work from the University of Illinois in Champaign-Urbana.

While counseling can be intimidating, it presents many opportunities for growth, whether that be through pursuing greater self-awareness, challenging our thoughts about ourselves and others, or processing trauma and difficulties. My faith in Christ affirms that we are created to grow from our struggles and suffering. I strongly believe that the support of a counselor can maximize that growth regardless of what background you come from. It is never too late to learn and expand our capacities.

My counseling approach is holistic and integrative and dependent on my clients needs. I desire to create a space that is safe, educational and supportive. I think each person has strengths unique to them that they bring to counseling and that there are a variety of ways to pull out and use those strengths. My prior experience was in the public school system as a School Social Worker. This experience has equipped me to work with a wide variety of populations with a wide variety of needs. Because of this experience, I am familiar with how to help students get support in schools and can help parents navigate 504 Plans and Individualized Education Plan (IEP).

While my past experience is working with children, I also work with young adults who are navigating life’s transitions and struggles. I specifically am passionate about working with individuals who are/ have experienced trauma, anxiety, and depression. I believe that when an individual is able to receive therapeutic support it can provide a foundation of understanding and skills that allows their experiences to build resilience and tap into their strengths in unique and meaningful ways.

There is always hope amidst suffering and I look forward to unpacking the hope that your future holds.
