As an action is repeated, the neural pathways connecting the cue, response, and reward strengthen. - Substitute the Response: Keep the cue and reward intact, but swap the middle step. If stress (cue) drives a craving for junk food (response) to achieve comfort (reward), replace the response with a two-minute breathing exercise or a brief walk.
- Practice Urge Surfing & Defusion: Mindfulness techniques allow you to observe a craving without acting on it. Treat the urge as a physical wave in the body that crests and subsides naturally over 60 seconds.
